IT'S ABOUT TIME...

2nd Peter 3:8-18

I sometimes get a little impatient. Okay, that's a lie. I am impatient nearly all the time. Impatient for people to call, impatient for meals, impatient for class to end, impatient for fun days to come, impatient for boring days to be over... the list could literally go on forever.

One thing I've had a peace with is the end of time. I don't stress about when that day will come, because I know God has a plan for it, and no matter when it comes, it'll be awesome.

2nd Peter says God's concept of time is much different than ours. It says that to Him, a day is like a thousand years. It also says God is patient because He wants to give more people a chance to make the change and follow Him.

Usually waiting for things gets easier if we have stuff to do in the meantime. Here's what the Bible says we should do while waiting for God to come again:

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.

So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him...

2nd Peter 3:10-14

It scares me a little when he talks about being blameless and spotless, but notice that it doesn't say "You need to be..." but instead, "Make every effort to be..."

God understands that we're human, and we're imperfect. But we need to live righteous lives while we wait. We need to make the best effort possible to be blameless, and look forward to the day of His coming.

Dear God,

The day You come will be glorious and will change our lives forever. However, as humans we often forget about Your promise, and get the wrong impression of this day. Help us to trust in You, and to follow You into the dark, God.

You might save us tomorrow, or a million years from now, but the reality is that we will never know. Help us to trust in You, to follow You to the best of our abilities while we wait.

Amen.
