Day Eleven
Day Eleven -- Genesis 36-38
(Read these chapters on www.bible.com if you haven't already... or else you'll have no idea what I'm talking about!)
Day eleven just adds more to the Biblical confusion, but the stories are pretty interesting, right? What about all of those names?
I laughed at a few of the names listed, they just sound funny. I guess times have really changed! I think I'm going to name my first child Oholibamah. It has a nice ring to it.
Anyway, most of the storytelling is done about Joseph, one of Jacob's many sons! He was favored among all of his brothers, and his father (Jacob) gave him a colorful robe, which was a very prized possession to him.
His brothers became very very jealous of their father's "favorite son," (don't we all) and they became even more angry with Joseph when he told them all about his dreams. In Joseph's dreams, he saw all of his brother's sheaves of grain bowing down to his.
His brothers, like I said, were angry with him. But he had more dreams, which, once again, involved his brothers worshipping him. If I were Joseph I would just keep my dreams to myself!!
His brothers saw him coming over one of the hills, and they plotted to kill him! One brother was hesitant, and proposed a plan to throw him into a pit instead of slaughtering him. The others agreed, and when Joseph appeared they threw him into a giant cistern, or pit.
Travelers passed over the land, and the brothers were quick to take advantage of the opportunity to sell their brother to them, and no longer have to deal with him. So, they did. They sold him off as a slave to some travelers in hope to never see him again.
Before they sealed the deal... they stole his robe. They killed a lamb and poured it's blood over the robe, and showed it to their father, who wept for days on the "death" of his son.
One of Joseph's brothers, Judah, left the family and stayed with another guy named Hirah. Judah married Er, who had three sons. The last son was to be married to a woman named Tamar, but wasn't old enough, so she was sent to another town until he was ready.
Except, they never told Tamar when her husband-to-be was "ready." Isn't that the worst? She spent her whole life waiting for her groom and they never came and got her.
In frustration, Tamar dressed up differently so her father-to-be wouldn't recognize her. When he came into Tamar's town for his sheep to be sheared, she tricked him into laying with her. Why, you ask? Just wait.
When her father-to-be, Judah, returned to his own town, someone told him that his son's "wife," Tamar, was pregnant! Judah was mad, because she was supposed to marry his son, (but it was his fault that he never told her...) so Judah said "Find her and burn her to death!"
Pretty harsh, I know.
When Tamar was informed that Judah was very angry, she told the messenger who the father was... Judah.
Scandalous.
Tamar had twins from Judah, and that's the end of that section.
TO BE CONTINUED...
I'm pretty sure the message here is this:
Keep your word to people. Not just friends and family, but be honest and truthful with everyone.
That way, no one gets hurt. (Or possibly burned to death.)
Peace out!!
