February 21st -- Deuteronomy 1-2
If you're new to this devotion site, this would be a good place to pick up your Bible and start reading along with me, that way you'll understand the devotion. It's a brand new book today, and guess what? Only two chapters. If you don't have a Bible near you you can also read these chapters at http://www.bible.com/ or with the BIBLE READER widget to the left of this post.
Passage Matthew 4:19:
And He said unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
Alright, so what the heck does THAT mean? A fisher of men? Men don't even live in water. And they don't eat worms, and they definitely won't bite unto a metal hook if it was dangled in front of their face. (Well, some people might... but they're an exception.)
When Jesus said this verse, he obviously didn't mean that he wanted people to go fishing for men. But what he DID mean, was for his followers to tell other people about Him, and to continue telling others about Him for the rest of their lives. Once they told someone about Jesus, then they too could become a fisher. Does that make sense?
So back to the reading. We're only in Deuteronomy, so Jesus wasn't born yet. That happens at least 20 books in the future... so be patient. We'll get there. But when Jesus said this, I thought it would apply to today's devotion quite nicely.
In today's reading, God kept stressing to the Israelites that the land they were traveling in was granted to them, and that He would be with them wherever they traveled, and that they should take possession of the land, for it was theirs.
I guess it just reminded me that (fortunately) our country is a FREE one, and we have the FREEDOM to worship whoever we want. We can assemble in churches without being prosecuted, and we can even have the freedom to own a church! The land is ours, the freedom is ours, the Bible can be preached to US.
When the Israelites were told that the land was given by God to them, they set out and reached it. When God tells them something, they do it... almost automatically.
How more clear does Jesus need to get when he tells us we should be fisher of men? His command for us is to be missionaries, and go and tell the world about Him and His love! Got it? Today, (and... forever,) take advantage of what the Lord has given us. Make sure we follow his commandments, and spread the good news of his love.
Go on now! Get! Go and preach the good news, people! Don't keep Jesus to yourself, go and be a fisher! (Of men.)
Peace out.
