Psalms 56-61
METAPHORS, METAPHORS, AND MORE METAPHORS.
I know we're out of school, and no one wants to talk about literary elements anymore. The test was long enough, right? But the Bible is FULL of metaphors, which you can find in today's chapters. Read now at http://www.bible.com/ or with the BIBLE READER to the left of this post.
So... what did you think? Did you find any metaphors yourself? Here's a verse that I read, and I was very confused. I was a tad bit disappointed, too... it just didn't make sense.
Psalm 58:6-11
6 O God, break the teeth in their mouths;
tear out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord!
7 Let them vanish like water that runs away;
like grass let them be trodden down and wither.
8 Let them be like the snail that dissolves into slime;
like the untimely birth that never sees the sun.
9 Sooner than your pots can feel the heat of thorns,
whether green or ablaze, may he sweep them away!
10 The righteous will rejoice when they see vengeance done;
they will bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 People will say, 'Surely there is a reward for the righteous;
surely there is a God who judges on earth.'
It's weird, right? It's weird how people were almost praying to God that others suffer? I guess it wasn't written to show this, though. Surely the author didn't REALLY mean for God to break some one's teeth.
The fact that I think this is portraying is that for people to change, and for people to accept there IS loving and caring God, it might be a little painful. It might take a sad situation for someone to realize that God will help them and forgive them in their times of struggle.
So, in MY opinion, the prayers people were sending to God was for Him to set the sinners straight, no matter how much it hurt them. Because, maybe once they start to understand the pain they're going through, they'll realize how much they truly need God. Their pain will end.
Does that make sense?
The last line of the verses I posted, verse 11, says that PEOPLE WILL SAY "SURELY THERE IS A GOD WHO JUDGES ON EARTH." That's kind of comforting, I guess. That no matter what someone goes through, if we help them to see God, their pain will stop and people will understand.
Be nice to those who sin against you. Talk to them about what it is they're going through, and together you can end both your pain.
