2nd Kings 22-23

MUCHAS GRACIAS!

In English, this translates to “thanks very much.” Why am I giving you this Spanish lesson, you ask? Because, the topic of today’s devotion is giving thanks for what the good Lord gave us.

This applies to today’s reading because of how Josiah changed his nation’s ways when he found the Law of God. If you haven’t already, you can find the word of God by reading today’s short two chapters at www.bible.com or with the BIBLE READER to the left of this post.

Basically, there’s been a pretty bad history of kings. Almost all of them were sinning against God, and doing nothing to stop the sins of their people. There were shrines to other “gods” and people were sacrificing their children! Needless to say, the people were in some desperate need of God.

God has the power to do just about ANYTHING, so when He saw his people in need; he led them to discover the Book of the Law, which was forgotten in the temple. It’s almost like discovering a secret treasure map. Maps can lead you to the treasure, and the book that Josiah discovered lead him to an even better treasure… God.

I think it’s awesome that God did this for the Israelites; it shows us that He is always listening to our prayers. However, when God listens and answers you, it’s really important to be thankful to Him! It’s important to not only say, “Muchas gracias,” but to show your appreciation by living for Him.

Josiah made some pretty bold moves in his kingdom to show his thanks. He burnt all the so-called “sacred” things that were used to worship other “gods.” He got rid of everything that wasn’t used for God, and held a big ceremony to introduce God to the Israelites.

For me, I think it’s like a giant circle. We’re constantly in need of God, and we sin. When we realize our great need for Him, He helps us out. Then, we give thanks by following Him, and that gives Him another reason to help us out.

It’s almost like a formula. We need, we receive, we give thanks, and we receive again. That’s why it’s SO important to give thanks for everything! If we aren’t thankful, then God might not see how thankful we are! Think about this as if YOU were God: if you helped out someone, and they weren’t thankful, I sure as heck wouldn’t want to help them again.

God will always be there to help you out, but when you need his help be sure to give thanks. In today’s reading, God helped out Israel. They in return changed their evil ways, and when they were in need of God a second time, God was happy with them and helped them out.

Think about that next time you can feel God’s presence. Be thankful for what you have, by not only thanking God in prayer, but by showing your appreciation by LIVING FOR HIM. He died for us, the least thing we can do is live for Him.

Peace out.
